Every great story starts with a big idea and a whole lot of heart
It started with a dream and a determination to create something truly special. In 2010, Larry and Darla Deiters opened the doors of Kahuna's Burgers with a bold vision: a unique dining and entertainment experience unlike anything Greenville, Illinois had ever seen. Armed with fresh beef, island-inspired flavors, and an unshakeable commitment to quality, they built something from the ground up — every table, every recipe, every smile earned one guest at a time.
What began as a humble burger spot quickly became the heartbeat of the community.
Just one year after opening, Greenville voted Kahuna's Burgers the #1 restaurant in town. It wasn't a fluke — it was a testament to what Larry and Darla had built: a place where the food was always fresh, the staff always welcoming, and the atmosphere always felt like a beach vacation in the heart of Illinois.
They'd hold that #1 spot every single year. Because when you love what you do, it shows on the plate.
From the very beginning, Larry and Darla knew that a great restaurant is only as good as its people. The very first employee they brought on board was a 16-year-old named Kate. She learned everything inside those walls — from the perfect burger flip to the art of genuine hospitality — working alongside the Deiters family through her formative years.
Kate eventually moved on to pursue new chapters in her life, but her love for Kahuna's Burgers never faded.
Through the years, Larry and Darla continued to grow Kahuna's Burgers into the beloved institution it is today. They introduced new flavors, expanded the menu, created a fun outdoor dining experience with live music, and made Kahuna's Burgers a gathering place for every milestone — birthday parties, date nights, family dinners, and spontaneous Friday afternoon celebrations.
The legacy they built didn't just feed people. It nourished a community.
In October 2024, something remarkable happened. Kate — that same 16-year-old girl who first walked through Kahuna's doors as employee number one — became its new owner, alongside her husband Derek Hoerchler. Full circle doesn't even begin to cover it.
Kate and Derek took the reins with one unwavering intention: to honor everything Larry and Darla built while breathing fresh energy into the place they both love. They are deeply passionate about the community of Greenville, IL and proudly involved in all the amazing things this city has to offer.
